Good Reads

Several of us on staff enjoy reading about pet-related topics in our spare time. Collecting tips here and there, what to try and what to skip, every little bit helps. Good reads on pet care can be hard to find, but fortunately we have excellent options.

Here are a few of our favorites. You can find these online (at links below or Amazon). Many are in public libraries as well.

Maybe you have your favorites as well—we’d love to hear from you!

Our Favorite Good Reads

The Other End of the Leash, by Patricia McConnell, Ph.D.

Low Stress Handling, Restraint, and Behavior Modification of Dogs & Cats by Sophia Yin, DVM (This is a pretty hefty book and not really a beginner’s guide. Her Perfect Puppy in 7 Days book or How to Behave So Your Dog Behaves are great options, more at the intro-intermediate level.)

Don’t Shoot the Dog: The New Art of Teaching and Training by Karen Pryor

Culture Clash by Jean Donaldson

Inside of a Dog by Alexandra Horowitz

When Pigs Fly by Jane Killion

Cat Whisperer by Mieshelle Nagelschneider

Starting from Scratch: How to Correct Behavior Problems in Your Adult Cat, by Pam Bennett-Johnson

Online Good Reads for Catscat reading by statue

People don’t seem to write as many books about cats as they do dogs. Hmmm, poor misunderstood cats!
