Garrett Knudson, DVM

Started at Den Herder Vet: 2019
Where I’m from: Waterloo, Iowa
Family: Two four-legged kids: Charlie (canine) and Sassy (feline)
Past pets: Growing up, my family had a two Golden Retrievers, two American Eskimos, and more cats than I could count at times!
One piece of pet advice: Don’t eat anything that your dog wouldn’t eat.
Afraid of any animals? Spiders, snakes, and sharks (but only when associated with tornadoes). Thanks, Hollywood.
Where is the farthest away from Waterloo you have ever been? The Galapagos Islands. I was fortunate enough to study abroad between my first two years of vet school. Can you imagine receiving class credit for a trip to the Galapagos? Neither can I, but they gave it to me!

How did you get interested in veterinary medicine?
I didn’t grow up knowing I wanted to be a veterinarian, but I grew up with animals and a desire to be in the medical profession. It was a natural fit for me.

What is the biggest lesson you have learned so far from being in practice?
Many hands make light work. I cannot imagine operating without our technicians, receptionists, and entire support staff.

What’s an unforgettable case for you and why?
I saw a young golden retriever at Iowa State in heart failure secondary to a grain-free diet. Fortunately, treatment was started in time and he’s now a happy, healthy pup. But I won’t ever forget the impact fad diets can have an on a pet.

Where do you see the field going in ten years?
Vaccines are currently being developed to treat cancer. I don’t think many people thought that would be possible 10 years ago. The next 10 years? I can’t even imagine.

Ever have any challenges as a pet owner?
Just a few…

If you weren’t a veterinarian, what job would you like to have?
Same answer I gave when I was 5: professional golfer.

What is something people would be surprised to learn about you?
I can – or at least could – dunk a basketball on a regulation hoop. It’s been awhile since I’ve tried.

What’s something new you’ve learned recently?
That Waterloo has a new Indian restaurant and the food is fantastic!
